LANTEGI José Ramón Anda

The exhibition takes its name from his place of work, lantegi - Basque for workshop - a large space crowded with models, materials, machinery and tools, where he creates and completes his projects and pieces. His workshop is an intimate ecosystem in which almost all his artistic output is created, worked on constantly and in detail. Located in his home town, this lantegi also holds memories of work in a family tradition connected with cabinet making and wood carving.
Lantegi is also a word associated with work to exploit communal woods, for the shared benefit of the local people. These nearby woods also essentially provide the material for Anda's sculptures and much of the inspiration with which he adapts and extracts the features of each log, depending on the species, quality and volume of these pieces of wood that go to make up each piece of work.
Here at the kubo-kutxa gallery, the exhibition is based on the idea of the workshop moving here, and in a way also as a simulated forest using the artist's transformations, from the initial wood to his sophisticated creations. The exhibition is divided into four areas that set out to show the visitor the different series created by the sculptor over time, as well as presenting his latest work created specially for this show.
THE ARTIST:
JOSÉ RAMÓN ANDA
José Ramón Anda Goikoetxea (b. Bakaiku, Navarra,1949) found his artistic vocation early, studying sculpture at the San Fernando academy of fine art in Madrid from 1970 to 1974, where he received figurative training in composition and modelling. In 1974 he won a scholarship from the Spanish Academy in Rome, a stay that was fundamental in personal and artistic terms for his training, allowing him to pursue research in depth into classical statuary and architecture and become familiar with modern Italian sculptors. On his return, involved in the febrile social and cultural atmosphere of the time between the end of the Franco dictatorship and the transition to democracy, his work took on influences and material and symbolic aspects from Basque culture.
From 1975 onwards he began to exhibit regularly in galleries, museums and arts centres in Bilbao, Pamplona, Barcelona, Valladolid, San Sebastián, Madrid and Paris, among other places. Some of his outstanding individual and collective exhibitions include: Sala de Cultura CAN (Pamplona, 1975), the Egam gallery in Madrid and the Windsor in Bilbao (1983), as well as the group exhibitions Salón de los 16 (Madrid, 1983) and Un bosque en obras, escultura española contemporánea (A Forest in Progress, Contemporary Spanish Sculpture) at the Esteban Vicente museum in Segovia (2001). His career has continued with major individual shows: at the Aula de Cultura BBK in Bilbao (2006), Los límites de la materia (The Limits of Matter) at Tecla Sala, L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, and at La Ciudadela in Pamplona (2008); Formas contra el tiempo-Denboraren aurkako formak (Shapes Against Time), at the Bilbao fine art museum (2012) and Causa formal y materia-Kausa formala eta materia (Formal Cause and Matter) at the Jorge Oteiza in Alzuza (2017). He has won different awards and accolades: the Vitoria biennial in 1978; the Ángel Orensanz international sculpture prize (Sabiñánigo 1982); the Ciudad de Jaca international sculpture competition in 1983, the Gure Artea prize from the Basque Government and a grant from the Ministry of Culture to promote and explore new forms of expression in 1983; San Sebastián city council's sculpture biennial (1983); the Zarautz town council award in 1989 and second prize in the Caja Madrid national sculpture competition in 1997. He has also created large-scale pieces on commission for public spaces, in bronze, stone and concrete. His work can be found in collections like those of the Reina Sofía museum, the San Telmo museum in San Sebastián, Kutxa Fundazioa, the museum of Navarra, Artium in Vitoria, the public university of Navarra, Pamplona city council and the Bilbao museum of fine art.

Egur Basoa Choreographic event based on love, detail and balance, performed specifically for the exhibition by NODE. 13 July at 20:00 hours Taking the meticulous work by the sculptor José Ramón Anda as the basis, an ad hoc piece that seeks the beautiful communion between the artist's work and movement is built. So, Egur Basoa [Wooden Wood], the redundancy is intended, is a nod towards the environment in which pure, meticulous materials provide space so that the performance comes alive. The NODE company belongs to Kutxa Kultur Enea, Kutxa’s cultural coworking at Tabakalera.
