2019 is the 200th anniversary of the year Francisco de Goya y Lucientes started to paint the Pinturas Negras in two rooms of the Quinta del Sordo. They are now on display in the Prado Museum.
This exhibition is an approximation to the enormous influence that Goya continues to exert on the art of our time, following the success of the exhibition titled Goya y el arte moderno held in the Museum of Zaragoza in 2008. It is produced by the Fernán Gómez Centro Cultural de la Villa (Madrid) and La Fábrica.
Goya’s work (1746-1828) reflects his era, that Age of Enlightenment in which Reason did not guarantee anything, and the great disappointment felt by the artist in the face of the inequality and injustice of the times of warfare he experienced. Francisco de Goya was a revolutionary painter -in both substance and form- who awakened the West’s awareness around the relationship between power and war. His battle scenes and sculptures have been used since then as elements to represent power and as propaganda art, and he introduced themes such as subjectivity, grotesqueness, deformity, madness and the world of dreams into art. As André Malraux said, “modern painting starts” with Goya.
Many artists have worked on these themes since Goya, incorporating them into their own socio-political contexts. Valeriano Bozal defines Goya as an “icon of modern art who will cast his shadow over the art of the future”. This exhibition delves into this long shadow through 83 pieces, created by 54 artists between 1960 and 2019.
The exhibition is structured in 5 thematic sections according to Goya’s series, made after contracting the illness that would leave him deaf in 1792 at the beginning of the crisis of the Old Regime, a crucial moment in the history of Spain: Los Caprichos, Los Desastres de la Guerra, Los Disparates, the Pinturas Negras and other works such as El 3 de mayo en Madrid.
